He would resolve to write them up on waking, but, inevitably, they were recalled subsequently only in fragmented and diluted form. So he took to keeping a writing pad by the bed. For a long time there were no epiphanic lightning strikes. And then one night he half-woke, scribbled frantically and, with a frisson of deep satisfaction, settled back to full sleep.
